Reanimation: Visible Music | LONDON
Colliding Lines return with Reanimation, our monthly live soundtrack series hosted at New River Studios. Each month we invite a diverse line-up of musicians and sound artists to re-score, re-interpret and re-imagine a programme of short animations, each month curated around a different theme and era.
This month we showcase work inspired by the Absolute Film movement of the 1920’s, pioneered by German abstract artists such as Walter Ruttman, Oskar Fishinger and Hans Richter.
Described by Ruttman as “painting in time”, these films were created as visual music; poetry composed through abstract shape, colour and light that sought to avoid the narrative limitation of film as fiction or documentary. Using techniques associated more with painting, photography or stop motion, the dynamic imagery is elegantly animated and rhythmically edited – creating a visual spectacle comparable to an auditory experience. Early in the movement, prior to mass distribution, the films were screened with the artists themselves performing a live score.
We seek to revisit and revive this tradition, contemporizing these hallucinatory visions with modern interpretations by the following artists:
- Lola de la Mata is a London based French composer, artist and musician (violin/electronics/voice). She is currently associate composer at nonclassical. Her works range from monotypes and graphic scores to installations and compositions for movement, voice, electronics and classical instruments. Her scores have been performed by Ensemble Entropy, Tre Voci, Distractfold Ensemble, and a CoMA trio featuring Aisha Orazbayeva. Lola’s electroacoustic works have been broadcasted on BBC Radio 3 and Resonance FM.
- Bell Lungs is a Scottish-born composer, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, a collector of instruments almost permanently on tour. Her musical influences veer between free improvisation, psychedelia, jazz, noise, drone and folk to create a nuanced sound world that explores natural cycles, environmental disaster and the microcosmic aspects of relationships. Bell Lungs also composes for theatre, spoken word and dance.
- Merlin Nova is a sound artist. She began her practice with a weekly radio show on Subcity radio, which then evolved into live performance. Her work has been broadcast on NTS, Resonance Extra & BBC 6. Her most recent musical release ‘oooooeeeeeyeah!’, a semi-improvised, off-kilter dance piece, came out on SLOW DANCE. The music video was a collaboration with photographer and filmmaker Sophie le Roux. Recently her practice has evolved into working closely with movement and dance practitioners for whom she improvises music.
Reanimation is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
